Done-for-You or Self-Serve? How Wedding Stationery Gets Personalized

You have found stationery that looks like it was illustrated for a fantasy novel: full-bleed artwork, low candlelight, gold that glows against a dark ground. Then the practical question surfaces: how do your names actually get onto it?

There are two answers on the market, and they are not the same product. In one, a studio sets every piece for you and sends back print-perfect files. In the other, you buy a design file and a browser tool, and the layout work is yours. Both are legitimate. They suit very different people, and the difference is worth understanding before you spend anything at all.

Need the wider picture first? Start with our Complete Guide to Dark Fantasy Wedding Stationery, then come back here when you know which look you want.

The Two Models, Plainly

Done-for-you. You choose a suite and send your details: names, date, venue, wording. The studio sets every piece, a person proofs it, and you review that proof before anything is finalized. What arrives at the end is a set of print-perfect PDFs at 300 DPI with bleed and trim marks. There is no account to create, no software to learn, and no layout work waiting for you at eleven at night three weeks out.

Self-serve. You buy a design file and access to a browser tool, then place your own text, balance your own spacing and manage your own line breaks. You have the file in hand immediately and you answer to nobody’s schedule. You are also the designer, the proofreader and the production department.

Everything on thornbloomstudio.com is done-for-you. That is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation, and the rest of this guide explains what it buys you, what it costs you, and how to tell which model you actually want.

What “Personalized” Covers on a ThornBloom Suite

A hand holding four printed pieces from an Enchanted Forest wedding stationery suite
A coordinated suite: one set of decisions, carried across every piece by the studio.

Personalization on a ThornBloom suite is total where the words are concerned and absolute where the artwork is concerned. Both halves matter.

The studio sets, for you:

  • Every word on every piece: names, dates, venue, times, RSVP details, menu items, sign copy, table labels. If it is text and it appears in your suite, we set it.
  • The typography: sizing, spacing, line breaks and balance, set against the illustration rather than dropped on top of it.
  • Wording conventions: formal or relaxed, host lines, courtesy titles, and how a name reads when it runs long. If you are not sure how to word something, tell us the situation and we will set it properly. Deciding who is requesting the honour of your presence is our problem, not yours.
  • Consistency across the suite, so the RSVP deadline on your details card and the one on your RSVP card can never disagree.
  • The proof. A person reads every piece before it reaches you, and then you read it too.

What stays exactly as designed:

  • The full-bleed illustrated artwork. The forest, the cathedral shadow, the starlit sky: it is the product, not a border around the words.
  • The palette. Every colour in a ThornBloom suite is chosen against the artwork and calibrated to reproduce in print. Dark, saturated designs are the least forgiving thing you can put on paper, and the palettes sit where they sit for that reason.
  • The typeface pairings, which were drawn to sit with the illustration rather than beside it.
  • Trim sizes, which are standard print dimensions so any printer can handle them.

You are commissioning a finished scene with your details set into it. That is why the invitation your guest opens looks as composed as the one you first fell for.

What Each Model Costs You

The finished piece is where the difference between the two models actually shows.

An honest comparison has two columns, so here are both.

What done-for-you costs you. You do not move things yourself. If you enjoy nudging a line by two millimetres at midnight, this is not that. There is also a proof cycle rather than a file in your inbox the same minute you pay: you send details, we set them, you read a proof, we finalize. And a handful of pieces genuinely cannot be finished early, because they depend on a guest list you will not have for months.

What self-serve costs you. Full-bleed illustrated artwork is unforgiving in a way that a bordered design is not. The type sits inside the scene, so a line moved slightly lands in the wrong part of the illustration, and a long surname that wraps unexpectedly can push a whole block off balance. Dark, saturated palettes are the hardest thing there is to reproduce on paper, and small typographic decisions that look fine on a backlit screen show up plainly on card. The work is genuinely yours, and so is the risk, which lands at the printing stage, when the run has already been paid for.

Neither list is a sales pitch. They are the actual trade, and which one reads as the bigger cost tells you most of what you need to know.

Which One Suits You

Done-for-you suits you if you want the finished thing, your calendar is already full, you would rather spend a Saturday on the venue than on line breaks, and you want one point of accountability when something needs to change. It also suits anyone marrying on a compressed timeline, because the work happens in parallel with everything else you are doing rather than waiting on an evening you can find.

Self-serve suits you if you actively enjoy this part. Some people find laying out their own stationery genuinely satisfying, want to sit with the file and try six versions, and would rather own every decision than hand it over. That is a real preference and there is nothing lesser about it. It is simply not what this studio does.

What We Need From You

Under done-for-you, your entire technical involvement is wording. Names as you want them printed, date and time, venue name and address, RSVP method and deadline, dress code if you are setting one, and your caterer’s menu for the menu pieces.

Your suite arrives in stages, because a wedding does. Save-the-dates need almost nothing; the invitation suite needs your full wording and your guests’ mailing addresses; day-of details wait on your caterer and your ceremony order; the seating pieces wait on RSVPs. You send each stage’s details when you have them, and we set that stage from there. Nothing waits on the piece you cannot answer yet.

Three pieces need something you almost certainly will not have when you order: a final guest list. Place cards carry one name each, the seating chart carries all of them arranged by table, and food labels need the list when you are labelling per guest rather than per dish. Those sit in their own stage (Guest List & Seating) and the rest of your suite is proofed and finalized without waiting on them. There is no deadline for sending your list; we accept details whenever you have them. (Guests’ mailing addresses are a different thing at a different time. They arrive with the invitation stage, because that is when envelopes get addressed.)

Table numbers are not in that group. Numbers 1 to 20 need nothing from you beyond your table count, so there is nothing to wait for. If your floor plan runs past 20, add-on sets cover 21 to 30 and 31 to 40.

One piece of practical advice regardless of which model you choose: get your guest list into a single spreadsheet, one row per guest, with each name exactly as you want it printed. Middle names, courtesy titles, the aunt who goes by her second name: decide once, in one place. It is the single thing that makes the last month easier.

Printing Your Files

Printed pieces arrive as 300 DPI PDFs with bleed and trim marks, the specification any printer asks for.

Digital delivery is the default: print ready PDFs and mobile ready JPGs, yours to keep, and most pieces can also be printed and shipped through the studio’s printing partners, by quote. Most of the lineup is also available printed and shipped, arranged through the studio’s printing partners. Email info@thornbloomstudio.com with your collection, suite or pieces, rough quantities, wedding date and destination, and we will reply with a quote. We ship to the United States and Canada only. Standard matte prints cleanly on full bleed dark designs; soft touch is a popular upgrade, and either can be requested in your quote.

Whichever route you take, print one test piece first. Colours read differently on paper than on a backlit screen, and card weight is something you can only judge in the hand. One test piece before a run of 120 is the cheapest insurance in the whole process.

If You Would Rather Set It Up Yourself

If everything above made you think I would honestly rather do this myself, that is useful to know, and it saves you buying the wrong product.

Everything on thornbloomstudio.com is done-for-you. There is no self-serve version of these suites. The two are different jobs, not variants of one product. Knowing which one you are hiring for is worth more than any comparison chart.

Common Questions

Do I have to lay out my own wedding stationery?

No. ThornBloom is a done-for-you studio. You send your details, the studio sets every piece and sets the typography against the artwork, a person proofs it, and print-perfect files come back to you. There is nothing to install and nothing to learn.

How long until I see a proof?

Your proof arrives within 2 business days of us receiving that stage’s details, since the clock starts when your wording reaches us, not on your order date. Guest List & Seating runs to 3 business days, because a guest list is a great deal more to set and check than a date and a venue.

What if something on the proof is wrong?

Tell us and we change it. Nothing is finalized until you have approved it, because a proof exists precisely so that a surname spelling gets caught on a screen rather than on 120 printed cards. Two rounds of revisions are included per stage, and two on Guest List & Seating, since late RSVPs are universal. Need more than that? Reply to your proof and we’ll talk it through. If the proof does not match what you sent us, that is our error and we fix it free, however many rounds it takes.

Do I need my guest list before I order?

No. Everything except the seating pieces is proofed and finalized without it, and those wait for your list with no deadline attached. We accept details whenever you are ready. If you would like your guest list removed from our systems once your suite is complete, just ask and we will delete it.

Can the artwork or the colours be changed?

No, and that is deliberate. The illustrated scene is the product, and every colour in it is calibrated to reproduce properly in print. Dark, saturated designs are the least forgiving thing you can put on paper, and altering the palette is the fastest way to lose the depth that made the design worth having.

What files do I actually receive?

Printed pieces arrive as PDFs at 300 DPI with bleed and trim marks. Mobile pieces arrive as image files sized for phone screens and messaging apps. The files are yours to keep.

Choosing Your Suite

Two collections are open now. Enchanted Forest is moss, firelight and gilded green; Dark Romance is cathedral shadow in oxblood and plum. Midnight Celestial is opening next.

Within a collection the tiers stack. The Essentials Suite is $79.99: invitation, save the date, RSVP, details card, and mobile versions of the invitation and save the date. The Reception Deluxe is $149.99 and adds the whole reception table. The Grand Wedding Suite is $249.99 and takes the entire wedding, from save-the-dates through to thank-yous. A handful of pieces can also be bought on their own, and nothing is locked behind a tier.
